The monsoon has begun, and before the heavy rains, it is time to ensure irrigation pipes are safe. The monsoon season has started and with it the time to keep irrigation pipes safe before the rains arrive.

Isn’t that the first monsoon shower magic? The soil smells great, the high heat breaks and you can hear the relief of the crops.

However, if you are in the field at any length you realize the rains are also followed by a lot of chaos. The irrigation system you put so much effort and money into can be completely ruined by sudden flooding, shifting mud and heavy runoffs. Washing out pipes, mud blocking emitters and the changing ground may break the plastic emitters.

Take an afternoon before all the heavy rain gets here to storm-proof your setup. Here are some tips from farmer to farmer to help keep your system safe:

Don’t allow your pipes to float away!

Lightweight surface pipes will rise when the fields get wet and will get blown away with the surface water. Do a walk of your main lines. When not able to bury them, weigh them down. Throw some sandbags, heavy soil or ground clamps on them. It’s better to nail them down now, than to get a huge headache tomorrow with a pile of messy pipes.

Avoid getting mud on the ends (yes, really, cap the ends!)

The worst enemy of a pipeline is mud. If the runoff water is dirty and silty, and the sun dries it, this is a concrete-like obstruction, and it is almost impossible to remove. Before storms, rinse out all the water from the system and after the storms, close all the open ends, valves and sprinkler heads with caps.

Roll up those flexible hoses

Don’t leave your movable hoses in the field during a storm. They are buried under debris, or even worse, someone accidentally drives a tractor over them, as they are concealed in the muck. In case of Krishi hoses, drain water, fold and put them in a dry shed till the situation improves.

Look for sun damage from the summer.

Hot summer temperatures have a definite effect on plastics! A slight opening from the dry season can open up in the heavy rains when it rains heavily. Now, visually inspect your lines quickly and replace any that are brittle or faded. A quick and inexpensive remedy today will thwart a big backlash next week.

Don’t argue with low quality pipes.

The truth is, the most effective method to deal with the unpredictable weather is to use gear that won’t give in the event that things get rough. Low quality and/or cheap pipes become brittle and crack when water-logged soil begins to move.

Enjoy weather with Savera Pipes

It’s a tough enough job as a farmer without worrying whether your gear will last through the night. We have an insight into Indian agriculture and we do not need to learn the weather effect of monsoon on your field at Savera Pipes.

That’s why we create heavy-duty agricultural solutions such as our champion sprinkler pipes, heavy duty HDPE Pipes and Krishi Hoses to really tackle the tough weather. Designed to be UV-resistant, flexible and crack-proof, they can handle a lot of “mud” without cracking.
